The manufacture of CAST STONE which FAILS to comply with BS1217 (1997) is a gamble and can result in a finished product which over a short period time may result in total failure.

A simple water absorbtion test may provide an indication of a products manufacturing characteristics . The process involves the application of a teaspoon of water to the surface of a sample of the cast stone. If the water is absorbed into the stone within 30 minuets then the sample can be assumed to fail a BS1217 (1997) water absorbtion test. Cast stone failing this simple test will likely present problems with discolouration, efflorescence surface crazing leading to ultimate corrosion and potential total failure.
